NOW PLAYING: What is LASIK?

ANITA NEVYAS-WALLACE, M.D.: What determine whether a person is nearsighted, farsighted, or neither is the match between three things: the curvature of the cornea, the length of the eye front to back, and the power of the lens in the eye. And we theoretically could change any of those things to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness. Now, of course, we don’t have a way of changing the length of the eye, so that leaves us either changing the lens of the eye or reshaping the cornea. LASIK is a technique for reshaping the cornea, in which we raise a thin flap of the front of the cornea, use a special computer-guided laser to reshape the cornea to just the right shape, and then lay the flap back down.
